Day70 #Thailand, Krabi

#Boon and bane of progress
Thailand! Yes, we are in Thailand, the land of smiles. We both were really excited to visit Thailand. We heard and read so much about this country, so we couldn’t wait to see and explore it on our own. Of course we are aware that there are some mass touristic places like Phuket, Ko Samui or Bangkok but we as individual traveller will find enough “original” Thai places :-)

Crossing the border was easy. We decided to go via Langkawi on a ferry because Claudia was still a bit sick and furthermore the boarder in Satun is said to be the safest and most relaxed one.

In Satun we quickly realised that we will have a lot of fun, because we both don’t speak any Thai and for us it is even hard to compare letters or words to a reference. Traffic signs, menu cards and even the hotel sings we neither could read nor understand. We were so frustrated, that we used the ”bible” Lonely Planet the first time on our trip and installed the Google Translater App ;-)

So it’s no wonder that one of our stays in a small town ended at a place where everything was in red colour and the gift on the bed was not sweets or flowers, no we found condoms and tissues there. But we had no choice it was already dusky…
The scenery along the roads is fantastic and the people all simile to you so you have to be happy ;-)

Since 3 days we stay in Krabi with more or less other tourists ;-) Funny is, all of them have the same religion - they carry the “bible” Lonely Planet always with them ;-) so they are one of us.
The islands around Krabi are awesome. Turquoise blue water, heroic shapes, terrific (under) water world, perfect Rocks for climbing blue lagoons....

On the first island we were a bit shocked, because in our mind there was an image generated by a good friend of us who visited this area in the 1992. He had told us from some lonely fishermen boats, but what did we see on our first island, Tup Island? We couldn’t see the island - we only saw boats and people, hundreds of them, lined up in a row.. 25 years ago the fishermen were fishing fish and now a days they fish tourists. But we can understand why so many people like to go there, the area is absolute grandiose, no doubt. It was a great day and a reflective evening. We also boost such environmental destroying mass tourism.

#Slowly, Slowly, Slowly…
Our bodies and material are not 100% sorted. Claudia still struggles with her circulation after the diarrhoea. Yesterday she got the advice from a doctor to move slowly - and that is hard for Claudia ;-). I struggle with the air condition operators. Unbelievable they set the AC to “Siberia” mode that means 16°C and max speed so a cold is inevitable. All here cough and sniff but 16°C inside and 35°C outside couldn´t be the reason … no … tzzz ..  beginners ;-)
Also our material made funny things. Our power adapter blew the fuse in 2 Hotels. In the second one they searched for the blackout 1 ½ hours. Finally they found the problem in the robust installation in front of the hotel :-)

But over all we are fine and enjoy the life in Thailand with spicy food, nice beaches, massages and a lot of smiling back to the locals :-)

#Endlich in Thailand

Day 63 #Malaysia, Penang

#"Bad hair" days
After we had left Kuala Lumpur (and just after our last blog entry, where we had mentioned our luck with the Malaysian weather so far), we had 2 days with constant heavy rainfall. It was still warm, but because the rain was so heavy we were really very wet after some time - and the same wet clothes were waiting for us on the following day in the morning, which is not so exciting as you propably can imagine.
Because of the rain, the roads required a lot more attention - all holes in the road were filled with a lot of water, and we could not recognize the size and depth of the small lakes on the road. For a car usually this is not a big problem, but for us on the pushbikes with all the load it can easily fill the day with unwanted surprises.
We could also not take photos during the ride on these days because our cameras are not waterproof!

Just after we had arrived in Sungai Besar we both felt really sick and weak. We found a clean and nice hotel, but had to spend most of the evening in the not so amazing toilet. As you can imagine,  also the night was not as romantic as you would wish for a honeymoon...

No more seafood

After 1day cycling in the rain
The next day we decided to move forward and try how far we could come. To be as fast as possible "in a case of toilet emergency" :-), we cycled with our short bike pants only instead of wearing "normal" trousers over the bike pants as we usually do here. Even though it is a Muslim country, the village people greeted us still friendly, even with our weird look.
Malaysias west coast is very flat and easy to cycle. We reached Sitiawan on that afternoon (90 km distance from Sungai Besar), with a lot of  interesting "toilet-sightseeing". We had actually in our mind to look for a nice and cosy hotel and sleep and rest and revive. But just after we arrived in Sitiawan, first surprise: Puncture with the new tyres! Johann was the lucky one. While he took off the back wheel, me (Claudia) started searching for a hotel.
First hotel: "Full house" - and I noticed the following notable sign near the reception:

2nd hotel: Nobody at the reception, but the prices shown there were on hourly base.
I did not wait for the receptionist.
Just after I wanted to go to the next hotel, it hit me: Puncture !!! I pushed my iron horse back to Johann, and we both repaired our 2 punctures. Johanns tyre has also a strange huge bump in his back tyre which we could not fix. It seems to be a general material defect. Looks like we have to look for another tyre, after just 220 km with this new Schwalbe Marathon !!!

#Different places of worshipping
We are still very fascinated about the fact, that so many different religions and places of worshipping  exist here in peace side by side.

#Sad and upset
Every day there is something to read about the "Pegida" movement in Germany, and we both are worried and feel very ashamed for these activities and their sympathisants in Germany.
This is not the place to dive deeper into this topic, but we find it important to make our opinion regarding this very clear, and say NO to "Pegida".

#New year celebrations - just a few bulletpoints and some pics:
-Up to 37 degrees Celsius on 31st and 1st
-New year party in tranquil Taiping: Go to sleep at 10 PM and watch the one and only, quiet lonely firework out of the window
-One more puncture and complete breakdown of Johanns new Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyre (we detected, that actually the damage in the tyre was also the cause for the last puncture)
-Successfull 1st aid- tyre- repair with ducktape

Damage in the new Schwalbe tyre / Sieht nach Materialfehler aus

#Penang
Because we feel still a bit sick, we spent our 2 days in Penang with resting and recovering and also solving our issue with the tyre.
We could not find another Schwalbe Marathon in Penang, so we used the spare tyre which we had with us as reserve and bought new ones which we will take with us as spare. 2 of them were as light and space-consuming as our old reserve tyre, so we just took 2.. after the last days we might be a bit paranoid now regarding tyres :-)
Our last night in Penang is actually a real treat - we just checked in the Eastern Oriental Penang (http://www.eohotels.com), a fancy wedding gift of Claudias ex-company, Serenata Intraware.
You will find some more pictures at the very end of this blog.

Discussion: where is the best place for the iron horses ? / Wohin mit den Radln ?
Happy portier

@Andrea, eine tolle Idee !!!
@Johann, nochmals vielen vielen Dank !!
