Day 57 #Malaysia, Klang

#The Big Rush

Since our departure in Singapore we are in a big rush. The race against time started at the Immigration Office in Singapore. We decided to travel from Singapore to Malaysia via bus, because the traffic on the connecting bridge is said to be very busy and non-relaxed for cyclists. So we jumped on the bus with our 30kg bag (each) and the 2 Bike-boxes. The challenge was the Immigration desk in the 1^st floor. We had to take all our luggage out of the bus, push it to the elevator, up, push to the desk, wait in the queue for the outbound stamp in the passport, push to the next elevator and back to the bus. That all without a trolley in 10min, otherwise the bus would leave without us. Yes we did it and overtook all other without luggage :-). It was a good training for active queuing – absolute essential for china

Yeah, and from the border city Johor Bahru we just rushed through Malaysia to Kuala Lumpur like a rocket, to be right in time at the Chinese Embassy for our visa application interview.  450km in 4 days! Still enough time to enjoy the incredible multicultural society. Malaysia offers a great variety of food (Indian, Chinas, Malays, European), a very peaceful mixture of different cultures (you can find within 1km a mosque, a Buddhist temple, a Hindu temple and a church)

And for us as cyclists good roads for travelling. Ok, the traffic is funny, but after the first day we are now a part of the chaotic system and it works. They give us our comfort zone. The people are unbelievable friendly. A lot of them gently blow the horn, smile and wave to us. We were also really lucky with the weather so far. It is hot (up to 34°C) and a bit muggy (it feels like the humidity is never less than 95% ;-), but we had just some short heavy rains. 

    

#X-Mas @ Banting

Our Xmas day was absolutely unique. We will always remember our Christmas celebration in Banting. First it was business as usual- cycling 120km to Banting, but then our “special” Christmas night started with a very delicious dinner in a Chinese restaurant. Because of Christmas we gave our body a treat with a 3 course menu. But that was even not enough. We went to the big M (what a shame) and ate as 4^th course McSundae ice cream ;-)). We were a bit disappointed that nobody had sent us a Christmas gift (especially because everyone - including us – know that we would spend Xmas in Banting ;-)), so we bought our presents on our own.

On the way back to the Hotel a lady on a pushbike stopped and invited us to join her to Christmas Eve in a church nearby. The story of Jesus birth in Mandarin-chinese language gave us the creeps. The Methodist Church community was so warm-hearted to us, and we even got a Christmas gift. We talked to a lot of nice people on the buffet after the Christmas night. Again a red-letter day for us!!!

#KL -  Kuala Lumpur

We spent the last 4 days at Kevin’s place in KL. Keven, his dog Spock and even his girlfriend Elaine – Claudia’s Malaysian friend and ex-colleage (connected via Skype) - gave us a really affectionate reception! 

On 25^th of December we checked the possibilities for our Chinese Visa in KL at the Chinese embassy. They were friendly and absolute cooperative, but after getting all information we understood what is absolutely necessary to apply for the visa and what we still need to organize, and afterwards we decided to get all missing necessary documents and then apply for the visa finally in Chiang Mai/Thailand.

We had a lot of fun, and the best guide for KL with Kevin. We enjoyed discovering KL city and especially the food. Kevin brought us to very nice places- we are aware that no other tourist would see KL from this perspective. Thank you soooooooo much Kevin for the unique moments in KL!!

One of the highlights was a breakfast cycle ride to a place where the origin of a very special Malaysian pork dish is (Klang). Kevin, Mr. Ong and Kitty encouraged us to have our first Chinese food lesson – Chicken Feet.  

Yesterday we were a bit surprised in KL city, because a lot of costumed people/teenager walked around the city. We found the source of them… the Comic Festival 2014…and we took part at the Festival. Very creative, funny and crazy people - MEGA FUN.

After our first 3000km it was time to change chains and tyres. All done – now we can continue our great adventure…

     

#Besinnlicher Wettlauf & Schneewäsche

Die Tage vor Weihnachten hatten wir ordentlich Gas gegeben und sind im Eiltempo nach Kuala Lumpur geradelt. Obwohl wir die meiste Zeit im Sattel verbracht hatten, konnten wir trotzdem Malaysia kennen und lieben lernen. Das Essen ist der absolute Wahnsinn. Wir müssen hier schnell wieder weg ;-), sonst nehmen wir beide viele Tonnen zu, da wir die vielfältige Küche (Malaysische, Thai, Chinesische, Indische und Europäische) ausgiebig probieren und genießen! Das Land ist eine echte Multi-Kulti-Gesellschaft. Hier sieht man Moscheen, Hindutempel, buddhistische Tempel und Kirchen auf engstem Raum friedlich nebeneinander. Die Leute hier sind super nett, jeder lacht uns an, hupt, winkt, … unfassbar. Der Verkehr ist sicher chaotisch, aber nachdem wir uns adaptiert haben sind wir nin bereits ein Teil des chaotischen Systems. Da kann man schon mal in die verkehrte Richtung auf einer 4 Spurigen Straße fahren, oder per Handzeichen seinen Raum gegenüber Autofahrern beanspruchen. Leben und leben lassen ist die Devise.

Am Heiligen Abend wurden wir spontan in eine Methodistenkirche eingeladen. Das war wirklich "Gänsehaut- Feeling", die Geschichte der Geburt Jesus als Aufführung in chinesischer (Mandarin) Sprache erleben zu dürfen. Wir werden diesen Abend nie vergessen. Nach der Kirche gab es dann sogar noch lecker Buffet in multikultureller Gesprächsrunde!

#Gestriegelt und gebügelt

Seit 4 Tagen sind wir in Kuala Lumpur bei unserem Freund Kevin. Am 25. Dezember hatten wir uns mal wieder ordentlich gestriegelt und gebügelt, da wir einen Termin bei der chinesischen Botschaft in KL hatten, um die Möglichkeiten sowie notwendige Papiere mit ihnen abzuklären. Wir wurden dort freundlich und hilfsbereit unterstützt. Wir haben uns aber entschieden, unseren Antrag für das Chinavisum in Chiang Mai/Thailand zu stellen. Also ist noch nichts passiert bzgl. unserem Schlüssel-Visum der Reise…

Ja, und die Tage in KL waren traumhaft. Kevin – der Freund von Claudias Ex-Kollegin Elaine – hat uns an ganz besondere Orte gebracht, und uns bei der kulinarischen Reise ins nächste Level geführt -Hühnerfüße !!!! :-). 

Gestern waren wir dann etwas verblüfft, wie viele verkleidete Jugendliche in der Stadt waren. Hmm, da wurde unsere Neugierde geweckt und wir mussten die Ursache finden und daran teilnehmen…Wir hatten mächtig Spaß auf dem Comic-Festival 2014.

Seit heute Mittag sind wir mit frischen Reifen und neuen Ketten wieder auf der Straße und steuern Richtung Gorgetown/Penang.

Ach, und übrigens haben wir jetzt verstanden, wieso ihr in Deutschland keinen/wenig Schnee habt. Hier in Malaysia waschen sie die Autos damit...tzzzzz... Verschwendung, kein Wunder dass da für Euch nix übrig bleibt :-)

Day 50 #Malaysia, Johor Bahru

#How to shrink a pushbike
Keith, our Warmshower-friend from Brisbane, accompanied us very early in the morning to Brisbane airport by bike. Because of him, the trip to the airport was very pleasant and relaxed, and we had a few good laughs together. The fun was over just after he left- we had to pack our bikes in Quantas airline boxes, and the whole bike was too large for the box- grrrrrrrrrrrrrr

... We took 1 wheel off, not enough. 2nd wheel not enough. Saddle and handle bars, not enough. After I (Claudia) had just convinced the oversize baggage keeper to accept the bikes also only with cartons wrapped around them, Johann (our world chief engineer) had already finished to uninstall them in a few single pieces and had packed these in the boxes. When seeing our horses half-dead in the box,  I had even more tears in my eyes than during the discussion with the baggage man. Of course I have full trust in German engineering, but I was not so sure about Etihad airport staff.. Finally everything went well, and our bikes arrived in Singapore in a good shape. During our visit in Singapore  we stored them in their box at the airport luggage service.

#Singapore
The very best about Singapore was meeting our friend (and Claudias ex-colleague) Barkha. It was amazing to see her again after a very long time, and to find out she is still the same: just gorgeous, and a very special and positive person. And she is also a very good cook, specialized on Indian cuisine ;-)
The 2 days passed very, very quickly with exchanging the latest news, laughing, discussing, strolling through Singapore, enjoying delicious Indian food, and looking from her balcony from where we had an excellent view on this exciting and vibrant city from above.

#What's next
Today, Dezember 21st we arrived in Malaysia - we can already feel the Asian spirit, and love it. Food: yummy yummy !!!!! Traffic: little crazy, but just the right amount oft crazyness. Step 1 before entering Thailand. People: yes, a lot ;-) !!!! And very curious and friendly.
We  await eagerly the next days/weeks/months...



#Entspannungsuebung für Fortgeschrittene
Keith, bei dem wir in Brisbane 2 Nächte verbracht hatten, radelte noch mit uns frühmorgens zum Flughafen, so dass wir absolut entspannt und bestens gelaunt dort eintrafen. Wir wussten noch nicht, wie unsere Fahrräder für den Flug bei Etihad verpackt werden müssen- dass man am Flughafen Brisbane auch Fahrradkartons bekommt, hatten wir vorab aber schon herausgefunden, so dass wir eigentlich keine Überraschungen mehr erwarteten. Nachdem wir dann erfahren hatten dass wir tatsaechlich eine Box brauchen und uns auch 2 solche zugelegt hatten, passten die Drahtesel nicht hinein-zu lang, zu hoch- keine Chance!
Wahrscheinlich zu viel gefüttert in den letzten Wochen. Methode Frau: (Erfolgreicher) Versuch, den Meister des Oversize- Gepäcks zu überzeugen, die Räder nur mit Karton zu umrahmen und so mitzunehmen. Methode Mann: Fahrrad in alle -wirklich alle- Einzelteile zerlegen und in der Box drapieren. Methode Frau kam leider zu spät, denn als ich das OK hatte, waren beide Babies bereits komplett fachgerecht auseinandergenommen und verstaut. Schon bei der Abgabe der Boxen hat es ordentlich geklappert, und der Wasserpegel in den Augen stieg schlagartig an. Es ging alles gut aus. Die beiden kamen wohlbehalten und vollzählig mit uns in Singapur an, juchhhuuuuuuuu!!! Während

unseres Singapur-Aufenthalts liessen wir dann die Räder in der Box beim Flughafen-Gepaeckservice stehen.

#Singapur
In Singapur verbrachten wir 2 Tage bei Barkha, Claudias Ex-Kollegin und Freundin. Wir kamen dort praktischerweise gleich in Ihrer WG unter. Die Aussicht vom Balkon war sensationell, und da wir uns lange nicht gesehen hatten, gab es auch jede Menge zu erzählen. Sie kocht zudem noch außerordentlich gut (Spezialitaet: indisch) und nach unseren eher schlichten Gerichten vom Benzinkocher war das natürlich ein richtiger Knaller für uns... LECKER!!!!!!
Dazwischen etwas Sightseeing, und natürlich Shoppingalarm! Unser Laptop hatte angefangen zu zicken, so dass wir uns entschlossen hatten, uns noch in Singapur nach Ersatz umzusehen. Und wir wurden auch fündig!
Da wir ja schon kurz vor der Reise einige Laptops ins Jenseits befördert hatten, gingen die notwendigen Installationen und Einstellungen schon ganz flott. Inzwischen sind wir gut in
Übung was das betrifft, das Gute daran ist dass es jedesmal schneller geht ;-) Wir hoffen trotzdem, cdass jetzt diesbezüglich Ruhe einkehrt..irgendwie geht der Spass doch ziemlich ins Geld.
Johann hat in Singapur auch noch einige neue Bekanntschaften geschlossen. Er versuchte, Mitgliedern des oertlichen Debattierclubs unsere Reiseroute näher zu bringen. Das Interesse war eher mäßig.

#Weihnachtsmarkt in Singapur
Schnee hats hier genausowenig wie derzeit im schönen Allgäu (hehehehehehehehe...), und auch hier eben sich alle die größte Mühe mit der weihnachtlichen Dekoration.

Als nächstes geht es für uns in Malaysia weiter, wir sind heute, am 21.12., angekommen und es fühlt sich schon wunderbar asiatisch an. Wir freuen uns auf die nächsten Tage!
